A fortnight of Mapuche activism, with peaceful demonstrations against a
backdrop of armed actions, spurred the government of President Michelle Bachelet
towards more decisive steps on the long-drawn saga of indigenous rights in
Chile. The authorities gave in to Mapuche hunger striker Patricia Troncoso,
granting her and other imprisoned activists greatly relaxed conditions of
confinement. Bachelet appointed a special presidential commissioner to handle
indigenous affairs, and her new interior minister announced that Chile would
